Let’s shine the spotlight on one of our generous donors, Ken Berg, owner of Berg’s Certified Organic Blueberries. When gleaners arrive, he’s there to welcome you with a jolly smile and friendly humor.
This family owned and operated farm has been an organic berry farm since 1950, probably longer before there were certifications. With a tradition of respect and generosity, Ken has been a donor to EAG since 2023.
Like any glean by the EAG, there is a pattern of mutual benefits. Bushes thrive more with cleaned bushes encouraging future yields, gleaners take as much as they are able to from bushes that paying customers did not get, owner gets a tax receipt, and when the season is over, he removes the bird netting and gives everything else to the birds.
When asked why Ken decided to start donating to EAG, he said when he was young and impressionable, his father asked him to bring an extra bag of potatoes to a family who were only able to afford one bag. He recalls this memory with tears in his eyes. Ken wants to help people just like his dad.
